Do you feel overwhelmed at the thought of writing your book?
Do you sit at your computer and stare at a blank screen with no idea where to begin?
Has all the initial excitement been buried beneath the rubble of confusion, uncertainty, and self-doubt with ALL THE THINGS you need to learn and do?
I get it! I felt that way for a long time, too. I struggled with where to begin and what to focus on first, but, through many false starts I learned that when I had an in-depth understanding of my characters, the rest came much more easily.
You can sit down to write a story, but if you don’t know your characters to their core, they won’t be relatable to your readers. They’ll be inconsistent...shells of who they could be.
It wasn’t until I began to dig deep into my characters’ motivations, psychology, and personality that I was able to create characters my readers cared about.
When you do the work of uncovering who your character truly is, you'll understand what motivates them to make various decisions and take certain actions and you’ll know how they'll interact with those around them.
What this means is that when you get to a point in your story where your character must act, you will already know how they’d realistically respond to any given situation. This not only helps you to write consistent and believable characters, but also helps to maintain your writing flow.
